CHAPTER 14

Theo

The humming of blow dryers next door woke me. I pulled Livia in closer, holding her in my arms. She whimpered, still asleep. Her naked body was warm against me, her ass soft. My cock stirred. It wasn’t the time for that now, but shit, I could make love to her again, and again. I nuzzled her hair.

She flipped onto her stomach. Even with drool crusted on the edge of her mouth, she looked beautiful. Relaxed.

And seeing her like that, I felt relaxed too. I could get used to seeing her like that. It wouldn’t be so bad. In fact, it would be nice.

Better than nice.

She yawned. “Is it time for work already?” she asked.

“Do you work today?” I didn’t work until lunch.

“What day is it?” she asked. She glanced at her phone. “Not for a little while.”

“Want to get breakfast?” I asked.

She smirked. “Are you asking me on a date?”

“The crew mess is…” I started, but I didn’t know how to explain that she deserved a date better than the crew mess without making a big deal out of it. “I’ll take you on a proper date.” I would’ve questioned my words, but her grin made those thoughts disappear. “You are my wife, after all.”

“And you are my husband,” she said.

Neither of us corrected each other.

The crew mess was full of long tables and benches, warming with crew, some already dressed, some not. We ate Lucky Charms at the end of a table. After she finished the bowl, she pushed it and her coffee mug forward.

“So, you passed the test,” she said. “What’s the plan now?”

The plan? There was no plan. “I’ll figure it out,” I said.

“You already know what to do. Apply for jobs. Get out of here,” she said, gesturing at the ship around us.

But that would mean leaving her.

A work-from-home programming position is what I always wanted. But why did it suddenly feel wrong?

“I can do that during the break,” I said, referring to the six weeks off crew members got in between contracts.

“There won’t be a break,” she said. “You could use that time to move on, to start the next chapter of your life. What’s stopping you?”

Livia wore a purple shirt and jeans, the most casual and laid back I had seen her. She somehow made the fluorescent lighting and lack of any atmosphere in the crew mess seem idyllic. For now, I wanted to enjoy this moment. To forget about job applications. To forget about the future. I wanted to hold onto that beautiful woman sitting across from me.

But she wasn’t having that. She furrowed her brow, and the adorable look on her face almost made me laugh.

“We can do it after your audition,” I said.

“This is your dream, Theo,” she said sternly. “I’m not going to go clean staterooms until you apply for at least three jobs.” I stared at her. “Okay, okay. Do one application. The dream job application. Then I’ll shut up and leave you alone.” She tilted her head.
